La France, le Français, français, française, etc.…

So you are a bit lost as per what to say to say French and France, here are a few tips for you:

When talking about the country (France), say :

  • La France, when you are referring to it,
    Ex: j'aime la France.

  • En France, with verbs of location,
    Ex: je vais en France.
    Ex: j'habite en France.
    Ex: je suis en France.

  • De France, to say it comes from it,
    Ex: c'est une ville de France.
    Ex: je viens de France.

Note : Always put a upper case "F" to the noun France.

When talking about the language (The French language, French), say :

  • Le français,
    Ex: j'étudie le français.
    Ex: j'aime le français.
    Exception: no LE after parler,
    Ex: je parle français.

  • En français to translate "in French",
    Ex: ce film est en français.
    Ex: je suis bon en français.

Note, lower case ''f" for the name of the language.

When talking about something or someone that is French (adjective), say:

  • français, for things or people that are masculine, either singular or plural,
    Ex: voici un vin français. (vin is masculine, singular)
    Ex: voici des étudiants français. (étudiants is masculine, plural.

  • française, for things or people that are feminine singular,
    Ex: voici une fille française.

  • françaises, for things or people that are feminine plural,
    Ex: voici des voitures françaises.

Note : lower case "f" for the adjectives.

When talking about a Frenchman, or a Frenchwoman, or French people (nouns), capitalize the F:

  • Ex: les Français aiment le vin. (the French = French people)
    Ex: voici des Françaises.(some French women)
