THE TIME : L'HEURE
Repeat
Quelle heure est-il ? What time is-it
?
Est-ce que vous avez l'heure s'il vous plaît
? Do you know what time it is, please?

AM |
PM |
Watch out !! In English, the expression o'clock may be left out
when giving the time. In French, the word heure (or heures if it's
more than one o'clock) is always used. It is abbreviated as h.
Be very careful about the pronunciation ; there are lots of liaisons
involved, and most importantly, THE WORD HEURE(S) IS pronouced IN
THE SAME BREATH AS THE NUMBER, as if it were an weird ending to
it.
So train if you want your message to get accross !
A quelle heure est le concert ? At
what time is the concert ?
Le concert est à huit heures du soir. The concert is at 8 PM.
When it comes to telling the time, you have several ways.
The Official Time
Same idea as your military time, but much more used in France. All our formal shedules (TV, train, plane, business ) will use this official time. You run a 24 hours clock, and add the minutes straight after the word heure(s).ex: le train est à 13h48. (1:48 PM). Le film est à 21h30 (9:30 PM)
Exercise
Don't forget to use "h" instead of ":" when you write down your times !
